A Central Saint Martins graduate has been shortlisted for this year’s H&M Design Award.

Maiu Bergman, 24, a BA Fashion and Textile Design graduate is one of seven finalists, who all come from a number of European art and fashion colleges.

The winner of the award will receive €50,000 (£41, 998), a sponsored catwalk show during Stockholm’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and a collaboration with H&M, which will be available in-store.

An internship with London-based design company Jonathan Saunders Studio will be a runner-up prize awarded to one finalist. This will be voted for online by members of the public.

Stubborn about beads

Light colours and beads feature heavily in Bergman’s collection and she told Arts London News: “The only thing I knew was that I was going to make a collection 100 per cent with beads and no conventional printing.

“At some point I thought I would include some sublimation work [a fabric dying process] because tutors kept telling me I was too stubborn about my beads. I’m glad I followed my gut instead.”

“It’s really an honour to be representing UK Fashion.” Maiu Bergman, CSM graduate

Originally from Argentina, Bergman went on to say, “It’s really an honour to be representing UK fashion.”

The award, which is now in its second year, was won by London College of Fashion graduate Stine Riis in 2012.

The winners will be announced on January 29.
