Students are ‘easy targets,’ ex-burglar warns
A former burglar has warned students that they are “easy targets” for criminals.
The former thief-turned-security expert Michael Fraser is now working alongside security company The Safe Shop to provide a visual online guide for students to help protect them from burglaries.
Fraser says that students are targeted due to their relaxed attitude towards security and the fact that most of them own valuables such as laptops, cameras and smart phones.
“For many students it’s their first time living away from home and they’re generally relaxed about security as they have a lot more going on in their lives. They don’t really think about the details such as putting the alarm on or ensuring all the windows are closed,” he said.
The visual guide produced by The Safe Shop is a helpful and accessible combination of all of Michael’s security tips with official advice from the MET Police. It is designed to show students the precautions they can take to prevent them from becoming victims of burglary.
One student, Michaela Stasova, a second year BA Media Communications student at LCC, who agreed that a guide like this would be helpful: “None of the areas which are cheap enough for students are safe at all,” she told Arts London News.
