Flood alerts for homes and shops at Putney Bridge
The Environment Agency issued a flood warning covering a 10-mile stretch of the River Thames as further rainfall is predicted. Putney Embankment will feel the full force as a yellow flood warning has been issued from Putney Bridge to Teddington. Businesses along the Embankment are fearful that the rise in water levels will equal disaster for them if the flood barrier is not put in place.
Even though areas along the River Thames are vulnerable to these situations, what worries business owner Julie Newens is the strong possibility that flooding this time will be much worse, as England experienced the wettest January since records began. Tides are expected to reach 115 cubic metres with low lying costal land and roads feeling the affect first.
Precautions have been put in place which include water filtration systems and plenty of sand bags. They hope this will be enough to stop the flooding into businesses.
People in Wandsworth who are worried about the flooding can contact the emergency planning officer on 0208 871 5747. Also check the Environmental Agency for updates.
