Why the obsession with the Kardashians?

ALN features writer, Jenny Long [Alice Russell]

It started with the sex tape.

Kim Kardashian and her then boyfriend, ‘Ray J’, made a sex tape that was leaked to the masses back in 2007.  Almost immediately after, Kim and her family were  the media spotlight after being commissioned for a reality TV series.

Fans of the Kardashians will mention that Kim isn’t just famous because of the sex tape, but because her late father, Robert Kardashian, represented O.J. Simpson during his wife’s murder trial.

But nobody really cares about that bit.

They are a family known for their ‘K’ names. Kim, Khloé, Kourtney, half-sisters Kendall and Kylie, and their mother Kris. There’s also Rob, the only boy in the family.

There was no stopping this family from appearing on websites and magazines as the world discussed what happened in the latest episode… and Kim’s amazing curves.

Now you can keep up with the Kardashians on TV, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and whatever else they’re on.

I will admit that I have watched a few episodes of Keeping up with the Kardashians, and I always get confused with who’s dating who or who that other person is. It’s clear that I am not keeping up with their lives. I didn’t know they had spin off shows like Khloé and Kourtney take New York. The series is so popular that in 2012, E! signed a deal for the Kardashians to be on our screens for three more years, for a total of $40 million.

The Kardashian sisters, Kim, Khloé and Kourtney, also have clothing lines in the UK – called the Kardashian Kollection – with Lipsy and Dorothy Perkins.

When they came to London to release their new clothing line, massive crowds were waiting to see them in person, to see three sisters who are famous just for being reality TV stars.

The Kardashian trio also have shoe and clothing lines in the US, as well as nail polish lines, fake-tan products and work out DVDs.

They are a family who have no boundaries to the cameras accessing their lives. Kim’s wedding to Kris Humphries was broadcasted on TV with a bunch of endorsements, and she was rumoured to have made a profit of $18 million dollars.

I don’t hate the Kardashian family, but it feels anybody can get rich and famous by allowing a camera crew into their lives, or by creating and releasing a sex tape made with a celebrity.

But you can’t knock their hustle. They are a business family with great ideas who won’t let anything get in their way.

The Kardashian empire is only set to get bigger as the deals keep flying in. They are endorsing products through Twitter, they get flown around the world to appear at events – they are A-listers who have taken the world by storm.

The family aren’t creating scandals and the media doesn’t seem to have a bad word to say about them. We’ve seen friends become famous through reality TV, but not a family. And the media is not just obsessed with one family member, but with them all.

Kim, the most famous of the family, is now engaged to Kanye West and they have a child together, called North West.

They’re a rich power couple (also known as ‘Kimye’) on the same social status as Beyoncé and Jay Z. It’s unclear how much they’re worth but let’s assume it’s way more than we will ever have in our bank accounts.

It is confusing, why the world seems to be so obsessed. There is no obvious answer. They just know how to work the media into their good books.

I don’t hate the Kardashian family, but it feels anybody can get rich and famous by allowing a camera crew into their lives, or by creating and releasing a sex tape made with a celebrity.

And that is not the way I would like to earn money.

They seem to have an easy life; whatever they want, they will get.

But perhaps in a few years, like Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, they will slowly disappear from the spotlight…
