Situated along the Peckham Road, a little way down the road from the newly student-populated Rye Lane, Peckham Pelican is one of the newest additions to the array of bars and cafés in south-east London.
Named after the estate on which it stands, this cafe/bar/gallery offers everything from hot and cold snacks, cakes, pints and evening entertainment at student friendly prices.
The décor is classy, quaint and stripped down. It cleverly manages to be cosy and spacious simultaneously, which makes the perfect setting.
Comfy squishy sofas and stripped down wooden tables, an upright piano in the corner and a wall of mugs which you can pick to hold your cup of tea in, make it an ideal setting for both midday lounging or evening boozing.
The food is a standard mix of café goodies. Starting at just £1, the toasted bagels are perfect for a student lunch; £1.50 for a salmon bagel is definitely a reason to go. The Pelican Hot Chocolate is a real winner, and there is wide collection of teas and coffees to choose from. There is a nice variety of cakes on offer if you have a sweet tooth, the lemon polenta cake is definitely worth sampling.
Peckham Pelican isn’t just good for daytime lounging. It opens as a bar in the evening and regularly hosts art exhibitions, music gigs and film screenings.
Cocktails on offer include classics such as White Russians, Cosmopolitans and Long Island Iced Teas as well as a few specials and start at a very decent £6. There is a wide selection of beers and spirits.
Peckham Pelican is a great new hang-out for south-east London students – head there now to beat the crowds.
