Basement drinks in Soho

El Camion has a number of signature drinks [Tom Nicholson]

Rating: ★★★

Tucked away on Brewer Street in Soho, a close walk from Piccadilly Circus, sits Mexican bar and restaurant El Camion.

If you’re feeling peckish the colourful upstairs restaurant serves up staple Mexican dishes with a variety of tacos, burritos, and nachos, ranging from around £6-£11, with the platos -including offerings such as grilled tiger prawns with lime chipotle mayo costing between £10-£15.

It was a Monday night when we headed down to the basement bar. A sign on the door said members only, but once we were inside the staff were very welcoming.

Although whether this was because we were doing a review or not I can’t be sure, so probably best to check if non-members are welcome before heading down on that night.

The bar itself is intimately dark, but not so dark you cant see your drinks. Decorated with a black and pink colour scheme teamed with authentic Day of the Dead themed images on the walls and subtle cobwebs draped across the ceiling, this is somewhere with a true Mexican feel.

As it was a Monday, it was not very busy at all, although the place was rather small in size so I could imagine it being a bit of a squeeze on Friday and Saturday nights, or when their Rock Karaoke started in a few hours time at 11pm.

Drinks on the menu at El Camion include a variety of beer, gin, vodka, whiskies, and of course tequila. Olmeca Altos Resposado; one of the less expensive spirits available on the menu at a reasonable £4.50 comes with a chaser consisting of pomegranate, tomato juice and what appears to be a liberal dollop of tabasco sauce.

The bar also offers a large selection of Margarita’s and various cocktails – before we even had a chance to order they mixed us up a free sample of their signature cocktail.

The Pink Chihuahua; a combination of tequila, lime, almond syrup, fresh pomegranates and egg whites, it offered a taste which was refreshing with a well-balanced sour, yet sweet flavour. Its easy to see why this is their signature cocktail.

El Camion is open Monday-Saturdays from 12pm-until late, and on Sundays from 2pm-10pm and can be found at 25-27 Brewer Street, Soho, W1F 0RR
