Pulled pork at Pitt Cue CoRating: ★★★★★
For the best pulled pork in London, waiting in a tiny crowded bar for upwards of 45 minutes becomes irrelevant once the first strand of smoked pig touches your tongue.
Pork is what Pitt Cue Co. is all about, and from their intimate, no-reservations venue just off Carnaby Street they run one of the best barbecue joints in London.
All mains are under £13 on the barebones menu, which features four types of meat and a daily special, each of which comes with a choice of five sides.£9.75 will buy you a “bun meal” consisting of beautiful pink-tipped pulled pork, smoked for 10-12 hours, served in a sweet, rich, and airy brioche bun, topped with slaw and pickles.
The barbecue sauce is nothing special on its own, but accentuates the pork’s flavour beautifully without overpowering it. Pitt Cue Co.’s side dishes are simple but tasty accompaniments to the meat.
Their buttery mash has a savoury streak courtesy of the bone marrow butter topping, and the rib cap beans are a meaty take on a southern-style barbecue classic. Staying true to its street food origins, the space is free of excess frills, spartanly decorated in raw wood and basic furniture.
The intimate space of the dining area holds around 18 guests, and creates a cosy, country house atmosphere that helps keep the casual feel. Pitt Cue Co.’s bar buzzes with the chit-chat of carnivorous punters eagerly awaiting their turn to dig into a tray of mouth-watering barbecue, while enjoying quirky cocktails at the bar.
The Big Mac ‘n’ Rye is a spicy and refreshing mix of rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and pickle juice – an excellent way to pass the wait, as the saturating smell of barbecue builds your hunger. Cocktails are around £7 and a draught beer or soft drink is £2.5, so you won’t have to worry about spending all your money if you get thirsty, waiting for your table.
The service is attentive and passionate about their product, and the quality of the food and drink is hard to match in this price range.
Pitt Cue Co. is great for a quick bite, but go early to avoid a wait.
