The 57th BFI London Film festival opened on October 9 with Tom Hanks thriller Captain Phillips.

Steve McQueen’s biographical film 12 Years A Slave was a widely acclaimed festival favourite.

Other highlights included a screen talk by actor and director Ralph Fiennes; he discussed his second film The Invisible Woman and his career as a whole.

Education events were also held with screenings and question-and-answer sessions for students from primary school up to university.

The festival closed with Tom Hanks biographical drama Saving Mr Banks.
