Plans to run trains later at the weekend on the London Underground have been announced by Transport for London (TfL).

Managing director of TfL Mike Brown said he wants to extend tube services for at least an hour on Fridays and Saturdays evenings.

The plans come after the success of later running trains during the Olympics last year.

Brown said:  “Following the success of the Olympics and the historic records of reliability, there is a great opportunity to consider what more we could do with our hours — particularly late running on Fridays and Saturdays.

“The Tube is the artery of London and we want to make the city’s heart beat strongly and later on into the night.”

Later running trains could also create job opportunities due to the demand for more drivers and night staff.

Unions representing TfL employees told the Evening Standard that there would be tough negotiations before any such plans could be implemented.
